Chapter 1

“Wait, what?!”

My jaw fell open and I dropped the rifle, the gun hitting the concrete floor and going off, blowing a hole in the nearby wall, and causing both the girl and I to instinctively duck. I dropped to the floor on one knee, as the old plaster wall disintegrated, before looking up through the dust, to see that she had recovered first, grabbing the smoking gun and cocking it again, pointing it back at me.

“Now, you will answer my questions,” she coughed, as she tried to clear her lungs. All I could do was nod. She’d now had the drop on me, and we both knew it. There would have been no way I could have disarmed her from where I was kneeling. In fact, the best I could have hoped for was to roll away and hope that she wouldn’t hit anything vital if she did decide to pull the trigger. As I coughed, I studied her. Really? This had been my daughter?! My sixteen year old future daughter? But how could that have been? And the worst part? Jaykx and I had married! What the fuck had been going on?! Why the hell would I have married Jaykx? Or, more precisely, how could I have given into his ridiculous charms and slept with him? I mean, talk about fucking nightmares! A disgusted shiver ran down my spine. Really? Jaykx?! How desperate had I been?!

“Who are you, and what are you doing in my territory?”

The girl’s voice shook me from my horrified thoughts.

“Huh, what?”

“I said, who are you and what are you doing in my territory?”

I slowly climbed to my feet, causing her to take a step back. It had been obvious that she had learned from my last attack, judging by the way she’d been shielding her side with her elbow, while still pointing the rifle at me. Smart girl. At least that had been something to be happy about.

“Why are you saying it’s your territory?”

She frowned.

“It was my mother’s territory,” she snarled, as if she’d been protecting it, like a lioness, “When she died, it became my father’s. Now, it’s mine, and you’re trespassing!”

“Your territory is this garage?”

“Of course not,” she snapped, “It is the whole block!”

“Really?”

“You have a problem with that?”

“You live across the whole block?”

“I live where I need to.”

“Like this garage?”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Is there something wrong with this garage?”

“Uh-”

“Is that what you’re saying?”

“No, but-”

“Because, if that’s what you’re saying, I’ll slap your face off your head!”

I blinked, surprised at her venom.

“I never said anything about the garage, so back the fuck down, girl!”

But her fury had matched my own.

“Don’t tell me to back down, bitch! You’re in my territory, so show the proper respect, or I’ll pull this goddamned trigger and save us all the trouble of holding this fucking conversation!”

“Okay, okay,” I exclaimed, holding my hands up, “I’m sorry! Your territory is quite impressive!”

“Don’t patronize me!”

Goddamn, this girl had possessed even more insecurities than I had.
